Malawi musicians perform in Harstad

Last updated: 25.06.2015 // Malawian musicians perform at the Northern Norway Arts Festival in Harstad, Norway after cooperating with the Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe.

This week four Malawian artists perform at an arts festival in Harstad, in the north of Norway. Monday, the daily newspaper The Nation interviewed Faith Moussa, one of the musicians. The Arts Festival—Festspillene i Nord-Norge—takes place from June 20 to June 27.

In the interview, Moussa explains that the four artists had done a project with the Norwegian Embassy in Malawi. The project aimed at promoting Malawi’s forgotten music. Afterwards, they—Sam Mjura Mkandawire, Faith Moussa, Peter Mawanga and Marlyin Chakwera—recorded a 10-track album. The album “won the hearts of the organisers of the Northern Norway Arts Festival” and “secured us a spot at the annual festival”, Moussa says.

“As an individual”, Moussa continues, “it is a moment of national pride when travelling for such big festival performances”.

The Malawians performed yesterday evening (Wednesday). Afterwards, the musicians are travelling to the United States and Tanzania.
