On Wednesday the 8th of February the Norwegian Ambassador participated in NASFAM’s (the National Smallholder Farmers’ Association of Malawi) tree planting programme for the 2011/2012 growing season. It is the ninth year that NASFAM runs a tree planting programme.

“This is a day of hope” Malawi’s Finance Minister, Dr. Lipenga, announced Wednesday last week. The reason for hope relates to the newly signed agreements between the Malawian government and the British, the Irish and the Norwegian governments on financial support to secure the food harvest the next years.

Rural girls are among the most excluded groups in Malawi and a large number of adolescent girls are faced with gender discrimination and inequality. This is why Norway decided to sign a Joint UN Programme on Adolescent Girls with UNFPA in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO on Friday the 25th of November 2011.

“A study done by Norwegian Church Aid and its local partners in Malawi has shown that Malawi is both a country of origin and a transit country for trafficking.” These were the Norwegian Ambassador Asbjørn Eidhammer`s opening remarks on the three day seminar called “Human Trafficking Best Practices Regional Conference” in Lilongwe.
